Pedro Bentancour Garin, an archeology researcher at the University of Stockholm in Sweden, has started a crowdfunding campaign on platform Kickstarter to fund the start of a new “organic and eco-sustainable Champagne-brand”.

The campaign will go live at a “random” date and time between now and 17 December 2019.

The opening will be published for one hour, and the first person to pledge will name a Champagne-brand that will produce 100 bottles per year, according to the researcher.

“Users have to visit our project page as often as they can and one lucky person will get it,” said Garin, an expert on ancient Greek wine-vessels who started the project.

The bottles will be produced and sold for five years after which an evaluation will be made whether to continue with the project or not.

“The name you choose might be your own, your company’s, your pet’s or whichever name you choose, as long as its inoffensive,” he said.

The company itself will be called “Béthencourt & Garín”, in honour of his parents.

If successful, he said, the company will also plant trees worldwide for 50% of its profit.

As I understand the system used to name brands in Champagne,, the lucky winner of the Kickstarter campaign will be able to choose the name of the cuvée, but not the name of the brand, which, in any case, appears to have been registered already as Béthancourt & Garin
