Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novels to be turned into a TV series

Celebrated American chef Anthony Bourdain, who died a year ago, is to have his graphic novel series Hungry Ghosts turned into a TV series by Sony Pictures Animation.

American chef Anthony Bourdain is to have his graphic novel series Hungry Ghosts turned into a TV series

Created by Bourdain in collaboration with writer Joel Rose, Hungry Ghosts is a four-part series that tells the story of a Russian oligarch holidaying on Long Island with a troop of helpers.

During the trip he invites his chefs to play a version of 100 candles, a Japanese game from the Edo period where samurai take turns telling ghost stories.

Taking inspiration from Japanese mythology, Bourdain put his own culinary spin on the stories, with one yarn focusing on a ramen chef who gets his just deserts.

“Tony mentioned it first during a joint interview, and then afterwards over a beer at a nearby tavern, he got into it. He was encyclopedic,” Rose said.

The quartet of graphic novels were released as the Hungry Ghosts collection along with five recipes created by Bourdain to accompany the stories.

According to Eater, Sony Pictures Animation has said the TV series will be an “anthology of frightening, hilarious, twisted, culinary-inspired ghost stories”.

Each episode will range in tone and will look completely different; taking advantage of the various forms of animation to best fit each story.

It has not yet been announced when and where the series will air. Sony Pictures Animation produced the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, so the quality of the production is likely to be first rate.

The last story in the Hungry Ghosts series was published in 9 May 2018, a month before Bourdain took his own life in France while filming the 12th series of his popular food and travel documentary show, Parts Unknown.
