Wine of the Week: Planeta Rosé

We at team db want to celebrate the very best bottles from our Global Wine Masters. Every Wednesday, we’ll select a wine that picked up either a Gold or Master from our competition series, and tell you why the judges loved it.

In a world where pink wines over £10 are almost invariably from Provence, it was pleasing to find a delicious dry, bright rosé from another part of the planet.

Hailing from Sicily, the wine is made by Planeta, a benchmark producer from the island, that crafts brilliant wines from native grapes, but made its name with French varieties, above all Chardonnay (which has consistently been another top performer in our Global Masters, along with Planeta’s first-rate Syrah).

For this rosé, Planeta chose the flagship red grape of Sicily, Nero d’Avola, to craft a wine rich in red berry fruit, with a subtle scent of roses, and, importantly, a fresh, lively finish – making it the perfect pour for that pre-meal moment.

Thankfully for fashion-conscious consumers, the rosé comes in the correct colour – a pale, ballet-shoe pink – meaning that this wine looks and tastes the part.

The wine: Planeta Rosé
The source: Sicilia DOC, Italy
The grape(s): Nero d’Avola
The style: A fruity, dry, refreshing rosé
The price: £13-15
The medal: Gold – The Global Rosé Masters, 2018
