Liv-ex launches Port index

Having recently launched an index for the top Californian wines in the market, Liv-ex has now introduced one to track the leading Port labels.

The Port 50 Index, as with the other indices, tracks the price performance of the last 10 vintages of the five most traded Port labels: Taylor’s, Dow’s, Warre’s. Graham’s and Fonseca.

Overall the index has shown steady if unremarkable growth. Since January 2005 it has grown 64.2%, which suggests there are opportunities to be had, even if (as Liv-ex notes) it is unlikely to “excite speculators” give then Liv-ex 1000 Index has risen over 200% over the same period.

Digging into the constituent parts of the index, it is clear that Dow’s has split away from the rest of the pack and is steadily pulling ahead.

This occurred in 2014 when the 2011 vintage was named ‘Wine of the Year’ by Wine Spectator. The price has risen 142% since then.

The 2007 vintage of Dow’s is also on the rise, James Suckling having awarded it 100-points on two occasions.
