Sir Ian Botham’s wine range tasted and rated

The Botham All-Rounder Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Included in the entry-level range from Botham is a Cabernet Sauvignon, which, like all the wines in the All-Rounder line-up, is a blend of wines from parcels across Australia.

This one uses fruit from South Eastern Australia, including 30% from Coonawarra, one of the country’s most famous and sought-after sources of Cabernet.

The wine has a pleasing mix of black fruit, from blackcurrant and cherry, along with a touch of dried mint – perhaps related to that Coonawarra component. Despite Botham’s love of full-bodied wines, this Cabernet is medium-weight, with ripe fruit, but without being heavy or sweet, and has a nice dry gently tannic finish. A good balanced youthful Aussie Cab.

Score: 87

RRP: £8

ABV: 13.5%

  1. Well, it is interesting. Liam Steevenson MW just got his first lot produced in India, naming it Yaatra. I would have wished there were collaboration between Sir Botham and Sula -firstly because he has been a very popular cricketer in India and his name would sell. Secondly, his friend and colleague Nick Pringle was working for Sula Vineyards in Nashik as COO. But he quit the company On August 2. With that thread gone, the process would be delayed anyway. But I hope he can work with Indian producers one day. Jean Charles Boisset of Burgundy/ Napa has launched 3 variants with Fratelli Vineyards, which were written about recently in your magazine. A lot of interesting wines are now being produced in India. KRSMA is a boutique producer which has been exporting to the US, selling at over $30 a bottle. Cheers! Jai Ho!!

Bought a bottle of your Cabernet Savignon – never again. Promoted by The Wine Rack.Stick with cricket commentating. Your wines leave a lot to be desired. Not recommended.

Very sceptical when offered both red and white Botham wine at the Wentworth PGA golf today.
I thought they were spectacular. I would definitely recommend wine lovers to try them.

Just tried the Chardonnay loving it . Wouldn’t mind this in a cask for out on the gin terrace for the ladies .

I confess I am not a cricket fan, but having just had a trip to Australia thought I would try a bottle of the ‘all rounder’ by Ian Botham. Cant tell you how disappointed I was. Not one to take to a party and own up to it!
