In the age of the internet no corner of the world is off limits, and it’s now easier than ever for a wine estate to offer up a slice of vinous paradise to the adventurous traveller
Since Airbnb launched in 2008, it has become easy to browse and book any number of boutique, unique and luxury retreats around the world. From sleek airstream trailers, penthouse suites, seaside slumbers, luxurious tree houses and wooded retreats, Airbnb has the lot.
The opportunities afforded by the platform to the wine industry have not been missed. As the interest in and potential for wine tourism continues to grow, an increasing number of wineries, big and small, are choosing not to open a hotel or formal hospitality business as such, but simply offer up a slice of their estate for rent.
This shift in how we approach travel has not only enabled homeowners the chance to more easily generate a second income stream, but the adventurous traveller to peek inside some of the most luxurious and picturesque wine estates that might previously have been off limits.

Margaux, Bordeaux, France – Chateau Marojallia
Set in the fine wine haven of Margaux, Chateau Marojallia offers a bedroom within its stately surroundings that feature sprawling vineyards, a Grecian hall and a swimming pool. Marojalia was founded in 1999 and is owned by Philippe Porcheron with Michel Rolland a consultant oenologist, and is often described as the Medoc’s first “garage wine”. Its vineyard covers four hectares, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot used to produce its Grand vin Marojallia, and its second wine, Clos Margalaine.

West Kowlwna, British Columbia, Canada – Strawbale House
Hang out at the eco-friendly Strawbale House in West Kowlona, British Columbia, which is located on an organic vineyard and boasts views to Okanagan Mountain Park. It was built in 2011 to leave as minimal an impact on the environment as possible. Its walls are built with bales of straw and are 16 inches thick to keep the house cool in the summer and minimise the need for air conditioning.

Its listing lives up to its name, offering luxurious loft accommodation for two with spectacular mountain views. Established in 1912, Bartinney has been in the Jordaan family since 1953. Rose and Michael Jordaan tend to its 28 hectare farm, specialising in small batch Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

Based in beautiful British Columbia, Apple Grove Farmhouse caught our attention with its picturesque backdrop and sizeable deck that overlooks the vineyards of Okanagan and Okanagan lake, making it a perfect spot from which to explore the region’s wineries. Set within an apple orchard, the team also raise bees at its five-acre farm.

Fuentealbilla, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain – Bodega Iniesta
Bodega Iniesta is owned by winemaker and Spanish pro footballer Andres Iniesta. Based in the Spanish DO of Manchuela in Spain’s Castilla-La Mancha region, Bodega Iniesta was founded in the 1990s by Iniesta’s father José Antonio, who started with just 10 hectares of wines. Now it has 200 hectares of vineyards across a 400 hectare estate, with wines made under the Bodega Iniesta label; Corazón Loco and Finca el Carril. It offers a number of cozy cottages that accommodate two guests each, set within the vineyard and a stone’s throw from the Iniesta’s working winery.
