Golfer Jason Day hits shot into spectator’s beer at The Masters

Australian golfer Jason Day quite literally hit his ball in the drink at The Masters yesterday, when his drive on the first hole of The Augusta National ricocheted off a tree, bounced off of someone’s shoulder and landed in a spectator’s beer.

Finding the bottom of the cup after your first shot on a par-four is usually a cause for celebration, but this wasn’t the cup Day was aiming for.

His wayward shot clattered through the trees on the first hole, striking someone’s shoulder before coming to rest in a green plastic cup filled with beer.

No-one was hurt in the freak incident, and in what is perhaps the most bizarre game of ‘beer pong,’ the spectator in question downed the beer so that Day could get his ball back.

The man was told that Day had to ID his ball and play it, and duly downed his drink, much to the amusement of the crowd.

After retrieving his ball, Day got a free drop but went on to make bogey, ending his first round at The Masters with a three-over 75.

Alcohol at golf tournaments has hit headlines in recent months, with Rory McIlroy calling for booze limits after he was heckled by a drunk fan at the Arnold Palmer Invitational last month.
