Top US golfer and budding sommelier visits Penfolds while on tour

Wine label owner, aspiring sommelier and world number nine golfer Cristie Kerr took some time off before the Australian Open this week to visit the Penfolds Magill Estate and the Barossa Valley.

Kerr, who owns her own wine label, Kerr Cellars, which produces wine from vineyards based in the Napa and Sonoma valleys, is also training to be a sommelier.

After completing a number of practice rounds at the Kooyonga Golf Club in west Adelaide, she spent her afternoons away from the course studying different wines from the Barossa Valley.

“I bought a couple of cases of wine and am trying to figure out how to ship it back now,” Kerr said.

“I love experiencing different wineries in the States and it was great to get the private tour there [Penfolds winery] and to be able to purchase some wines that we can’t get in the States. It’s all research for me, I’m studying to be a sommelier, but I’m also here for the golf”.

Touring the winery with fellow golfers Morgan Pressel and Dani Holmqvist, the trio were shown a display of different vintages of Penfolds Grange before taking part in a tasting including the 2013 vintage.

Kerr began her Australian campaign at 1:07pm local time today alongside her Team USA Solheim Cup teammate Austin Ernst and Wei-Ling Hsu.
