Top 10 highest rated wines on Vivino: 10-6

10: Château Lafite Rothschild 2009 – £1,265 / 279 ratings

The 2009 vintage of the revered Bordeaux first growth charmed Vivino users with its notes of “blackberry, prune, graphite, mint, plums and cedar”.

They also praised its “exceptional precision and notes of tobacco, tea and sweet earth” on the palate. “Long and classy, with perfect balance with ripe soft tannins and a lingering finish, it isn’t sinful to drink it now,” enthused one user.

With owner Baron Eric de Rothschild stepping aside to make way for his daughter Saskia to run the estate, we wonder if it will be business as usual at Lafite or whether there might be changes in store with young blood at the helm.

9: Quintarelli Giuseppe Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2000 – £832 / 588 ratings

Giuseppe Quintarelli makes traditional Amarone in the Veneto aged for seven years in Slovenian oak. According to Berry Bros, the wines are “an unmatched benchmark for Amarone” and “one of the most complex produced in Italy”.

The last vintage Giuseppe made before he died, Vivino users praised its notes of “wild berries, forest floor, herbal oils, almond, baking spice, floral notes, dried apricot, cinnamon, plum jam, and beautiful cherry aromas”, along with its smooth palate and lingering tannins.

8: Catena Zapata Estiba Reservada 2004 – £102 / 209 ratings

This Catena project began in the early 1980s with the selection of the best mountain vineyard sites and the most suitable clones of Cabernet, Malbec and Merlot, with the aim of producing an Argentine wine that could rival the most prestigious of the world. And it seems to have worked.

Vivino users loved its “enticing blend of red fruits, plums and cassis with a touch of spice, cherries, raspberries, plum, figs, herbs, cedar, tobacco and vainilla”. They were also wowed by its elegance, balance and well-integrated tannins. “The closest to world-class old world I have tasted from Argentina,” raved one reviewer.

7: Gargiulo G Major Seven Study Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 – £109 / 74 ratings

Named after a classic jazz chord, this Napa Cabernet from Oakville is supported by Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. With just 900 cases made a year, Vivino users adored its aromas of “blackberries, wet tobacco, vanilla, coffee, red fruit and saddle leather”, and were charmed by its “smooth tannins and structured finish”. Though a few thought it needed longer in bottle to really shine.

6: W. & J. Graham’s Single Harvest Tawny Port 1972 – £180 / 294 ratings

Peter Symington chose the 1972 as the first single harvest for ageing in seasoned oak casks after his family bought Port house Graham’s in 1970. Just 712 bottles were filled with the nectar in 2015.

Vivino users praised its aromas of “dried fruit, caramel, earthy spice, walnuts, tobacco, orange peel, honeycomb and licorice”, they also loved its vivid acidity, concentration and unctuous texture. One user went as far as to describe it as the best Port they have ever tasted.
