Innis & Gunn invites beer fans to create their dream pint with the weirdest flavours they can think of

Scotttish brewer Innis & Gunn is giving beer fans the chance to create their dream drink with the strangest flavours they can think of in a new nationwide competition.

The competition, “Imagine & Gunn”, will see entrants compete for the chance to brew a new limited edition barrel-aged beer with founder and master brewer Dougal Gunn Sharp at the drinks maker’s Perth headquarters.

The new brew will bear the winner’s name, and will be sold across the UK in the summer of 2018.

The competition was initially launched in Sweden last year, with a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout infused with jalapeño peppers taking the top spot.

Previous flavours which have appeared in the competition include raspberry and maple syrup.

Sharp said: “Ideas can come from anywhere and everywhere, and Imagine & Gunn really excites me because the possibilities for beer are limitless.”

“The competition is our way of inspiring beer drinkers to look at their beer and see something new.”

Beer fans and microbrewers will be able to submit their beer recipes to the brewer’s website until Friday 17 November. A shortlist will then be put to the public vote, with the winner announced this December.

The winning recipe will be “barrel-aged” according to Innis & Gunn, but the brewery has come under fire for using this term in recent months as members of the industry claim it is false advertising.

Innis & Gunn actually uses pieces of oak barrels to flavour its beer, rather than storing it in a barrel to mature.

Speaking to the Morning Advertiser about the brewer’s barrel-aged claims, Sharp said: “It is no different whether we use our new ‘barrel into beer’ technique, or the traditional beer into barrel method which we’ve been using for fifteen years on our limited-edition beers.”
