Whisky Auctioneer in bid to attract wine buyers

The Perthshire-based online rare whisky specialist, Whisky Auctioneer, is launching a new online auction service for fine wine lovers having seen a “big increase” in customers wanting to buy and sell wine on its platform.

Stuart Campbell will head up the new wine arm of Whisky Auctioneer

The new service, Wine Auctioneer, will run along the same lines as the whisky site and promises a, “fair, transparent and uncompromising service.”

Along with a valuation service, Wine Auctioneer will also auction bottles held in-bond, as well as those in collectors’ cellars.

Founder and managing director, Iain McClune, said: “Over the past four years we have seen a big increase in consignments of wine, port and other spirits to our auctions.

“It became clear that there was a demand for an easy to use online auction platform within the fine wine community. With our established reputation as specialist auctioneers and our in-depth knowledge of the drinks industry it was a natural move to launch a dedicated website to meet this demand.”

The new wine team will be overseen by Stuart Campbell (pictured), who has 15 years experience in the industry including as owner and director of the independent merchant, Fyne Wines.

Campbell added: “We’re all really excited by this new venture. Wine Auctioneer heralds a movement away from the traditional bricks-and-mortar auction house towards a platform that meets the needs of a modern global audience of buyers and sellers. We are the fine wine auction for the 21st century.

“In 2016 almost US$340m was made from wine auctions around the globe, with sales taking place across Europe, the US and Hong Kong. Despite having a global customer base only 11% of these sales were generated through online auctions. We believe we can increase both the proportion and value of online wine auctions by offering buyers and sellers alike a simpler, fairer and less restrictive auctioning experience.”

Wine Auctioneer’s inaugural auction will run from 10-27 November this year.
