Corkscrew-wielding Singaporean jailed for assault

A Singaporean pub employee has been sentenced to one year in jail and three strokes of caning after using a corkscrew to assault a client, causing pain, laceration and bleeding to his face, as reported by the Strait Times.

The deputy public prosecutor Kong Kuek Foo told the newspaper that the victim, Tay Boon Kheng, 41, had earlier gone to Club Oceanz, where the assailant, Chen Weixiong, worked, for drinks.

Tay was intoxicated and tried to chat up the pub manager’s girlfriend, causing Tay to push the manager’s chest when he confronted him.

Chen got angry upon seeing this and followed Tay outside with a corkscrew in hand, and punched the victim at least four times, according to eye witnesses.

This is not the first time that Chen had been jailed for a violent crime. In 2003, he was sentenced to 14 years in jail for assault and robbery.

Caning remains a form of corporal punishment in Singapore for a range of offences and crimes including sexual abuse, vandalism, rioting or over-staying by foreign visitors.
