Patrick Stewart quaffs Champagne from a sweaty boot
Sir Patrick Stewart helped Daniel Ricciardo celebrate his third place finish at the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix this weekend with a “shoey” – drinking Champagne from the driver’s sweaty boot.

The ‘shoey’ is a popular celebratory stunt in Australia, where the drinker either removes their own shoe, or nominates a friend’s shoe to be filled with a drink, usually beer. Filling his boot with Champagne has become the trademark victory dance of F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo, who first drank fizz from his own boot following his second place finish at the 2016 German Grand Prix.
On what a sweaty boot brings to a fine Champagne, Ricciardo has stated: “If the sparkling wine is cold, then it tastes good. If it’s warm then you might get the sweat through it but the cold taste kills the bad stuff… so it’s delicious.”
This weekend it was Sir Pat Stew’s turn to take part in a ‘shoey’, rising to the challenge with a surprising amount of enthusiasm and gusto.
After watching Ricciardo first drain his own boot of Champagne, in this case Champagne Carbon, Stewart said: “Oh my. I know what’s coming. This is becoming a ritual!”, valiantly adding: “I’d love some, yeah. Come on!”
Raising the boot to his lips, Sir Patrick drained it, declaring: “Bravo! Good vintage!”
Race winner Lewis Hamilton later applauded the Star Trek actor for his efforts, adding: “You see how sweaty his feet are? There’s a lot of toe-jam in that shoe.”
To which Stewart declared: “I don’t care, I don’t care! I made the podium for the first time! I will drink out of anybody’s shoes!”
