New on Wine List Confidential: Sea Containers

Sea Containers – Wine List Confidential Score: 89.6

A great list of varied white varieties is available by the glass at this slick venue inspired by the golden age of transatlantic travel.

It kicks off with a page devoted to the best bins from Aussie wine super-brand Penfolds, including the absolute top of the pops Penfolds Grange, (£590 for John Duval’s 1994 vintage), the slightly more affordable St Henri 2010 (£170), and the lovely cool-climate Bin 311 Chardonnay, which you can buy by the glass (£16.50 for 125ml).

The Coravin selection is very exciting – mature vintages from the likes of Prüm, Dagueneau, Cotat, Pingus, Caymus and Yquem all command attention; the standard by the glass list is also very generous.

New World selections stand out in general, while Burgundy and Bordeaux reds are also carefully chosen. English sparkling Nyetimber is also an option – the 2009 Blanc de Blancs gives Champagne costing considerably more a run for its money.

Paul Hobbs Chardonnay from Russian River Valley, California, may be pricey but is always good to see on a list, as is Milton’s ‘Riverpoint’ Viognier from New Zealand.

Marcel Lapierre’s Morgon is another highlight, as is Ridge Vineyards ‘Lytton Springs’. Cloudy Bay’s ‘Te Koko’, Huia Sauvignon Blanc and Prophet Rock’s Riesling from Otago, New Zealand, complete a convincing New Zealand selection.
