The award recognises entrepreneurs and key industry figures who have innovated in their chosen profession for at least 10 years. The award was presented by King Felipe of Spain in a ceremony at the Museo Arqueológico Regional de la Comunidad de Madrid.

The event, chaired by King Felipe, was organised by the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela Olmo.

Commenting on his award, Carlos Moro said: “This award is a great honour. It’s a recognition of small and medium-sized companies` efforts towards development and innovation, and encourages us to double efforts in our commitment for research, development and innovation (R&D&I).”

Other companies winning awards at this year’s ceremony included Agencia Gallega for innovation in the ‘public purchasing’ category and Cosentino in the ‘iInternationalisation’ category.

Award-winners personalities of previous ceremonies were Manuel Torres Martínez (M Torres) in 2015, Juan Miguel Villar Mir (Villar Mir) in 2013, Joaquín Moya-Angeler Cabrera (Corporación Tecnológica de Andalucía) in 2012 and Enrique de Sendagorta Aramburu (SENER) in 2011.

The jury was chaired by the secretary general for science and innovation, María Luisa Poncela.

The jury acknowledged Carlos Moro’s longstanding commitment to innovation in the wine sector, in particular in respect of the environment, sustainability and using R&D&I to boost competitiveness.

Grupo Matarromera is engaged with a number of R&D&I projects both nationally and internationally, boasting nine patents in different fields of research, including traceability, process improvement, non-alcoholic wine production, extraction of polyphenols and high-end cosmetics development.

In the past two decades Grupo Matarromera has invested €30m in R&D&I, which it claims is the highest R&D&I budget of any company in the Spanish wine industry.
