The organisation has said that for the forseeable future beer at the Rogers Centre will be served in plastic cups after one unruly spectator threw a nearly full can at an opposing player recently.

While the team played the Baltimore Orioles in the American League wild card game, a Blue Jays fan threw his beer at Baltimore outfielder Hyun Soo Kim as he tried to make a catch in the seventh innings.

Although he missed his target and the Blue Jays won the game, this as well as previous incidents has prompted the club to ban the selling of canned beer entirely, at least for the rest of the playoffs with Toronto now preparing to face either the Cleveland Indians or Boston Red Sox in the championship game.

Last year the club banned canned beer in the upper deck after beers were thrown at members of the Texas Rangers during the playoffs and in 2013 another fan threw a beer at another Orioles outfielder.

The man behind this particular episode, Ken Pagan, turned himself in and was charged with one count of ‘mischief’.

Fans may be desperate for their team to succeed but at US$6.79 a brew and Toronto already one of the most expensive MLB stadiums to visit, it’s an expensive way to show one’s support.
