Shia LaBeouf says alcohol nearly ruined his life

Actor Shia LaBeouf is the latest famous face to go public on his battles with alcohol, explaining that it very nearly destroyed him as he reflects on 12 months of sobriety.

The 30-year-old admitted in a recent interview with Variety that his life came dangerously close to spiralling out of control 12 months ago following an arrest in Austin, Texas in October of last year for public intoxication.

And it was during the photo shoot for the Variety interview that his confession came to light. When asked to pose in a vintage wine cellar he said: “No. That s*** almost f***** up my life.”

“You don’t touch it, “ LaBeouf added. “Alcohol or any of that s*** will send you haywire. I can’t f*** with none of it. I’ve got to keep my head low.”

LaBeouf’s arrest last year came after an altercation with a police officer, but he has been in trouble with the law on five separate occasions in the past. He has since taken the time to partake in the 12-step programme, though he confesses that his issues with alcohol stem back to childhood.

He claims to have been arrested for the first time at nine years old, and that his father frequently brought drugs into the family home.

“[My dad] gave me my first joint when I was probably 11 or 12.”

However, he now seems he has his life and career back on track as he gears up for the release of American Honey in October.
