Rediscover Chablis in UK educational tour

Find out why there’s so much more to Chablis than delicate Chardonnay-based whites in a series of UK-based masterclasses designed to explore the full diversity of this dynamic French region.

The Chablis Wines masterclasses are an initiative from the BIVB Chablis

Called ‘Re-discover Chablis’, the events will take attendees through the varied range of whites produced by this appellation, covering all quality levels, from Petit Chablis to Chablis Grand Cru, while highlighting the changes taking place in terms of winemaking and viticulture.

Hosting the masterclasses is writer and wine educator Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW, who recently ran a packed series of UK-based events on “accessible” wines from Bourgogne.

The classes are being held this year in Oxford, Exeter and Belfast, beginning in Oxford on 10 August, where Michelle will run the event from 3-5pm at the Saïd Business School on Park End Street.

Celebrated around the world for its wines, Chablis is the natural home of the Chardonnay grape, and the wines produced in the region are widely believed to provide the purest expression of the variety.

Michelle will present a selection of all four styles of Chablis wine – Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru – and explore the stylistic nuances between each appellation (and even between right and left bank Chablis Premier Cru).

She will also show why these wines work so well in the on-trade and independent sectors, and talk about how these classic examples of Chardonnay are suitable for adventurous food-matching.

The Chablis Wines masterclasses are an initiative from the BIVB Chablis (the trade board for Chablis Wines), and are being organised in association with the drinks business in the UK.

• Belfast on 21 November
