Grubb’s Madeira collection for sale

A collection of rare Madeira from the cellar of Patrick Grubb MW is to go on sale in London next month.

More than 250 bottles from the cellar of the fortified wine expert will be sold at Bonhams on 14 July.

The consignment features Madeira dating back to the 18th century and reflect the wine’s venerable history. At least two bottles in the sale: Rumo da India 1810 (est. £1,000-£3,000 apiece) are known to have been on a voyage to India and back.

As well as his wine, Grubb is selling part of his substantial library filled with rare wine books.

Highlights of the sale include:

  • Two bottles of 1795 Terrantez (est. £1,800-£2,200 apiece)
  • A bottle of Perestrello 1840 (est. £1,600-£2,000)
  • A bottle of Bastardo 1840 (est. £800-£1,000)
  • A bottle of Moscatel 1875 (est. £400-£500)
  • A bottle of Boaventura 1877 (est. £600-£700)
  • Several bottles of Faja dos Padres (est. £380-£450) – a celebrated vineyard that stopped producing wine in the 1920s.

The head of Bonhams Wine Department, Richard Harvey MW, commented: “Patrick Grubb is a legendary figure  in wine circles and it is a privilege to be selling not only his exceptional cellar but also his library of books and cuttings built up over a lifetime devoted to this most fascinating of wines.”
