Top 10 wines in the UK press

Sainsbury’s English Sparkling Brut

“Chardonnay provides a warm biscuity base, pinot noir brings red fruit”, writes the Sunday Times drinks writer Damian Barr.

“More Worcester pearmain apple than strawberry, with a kiss of cinnamon”, he continues.

£21, Sainsbury’s

Lamberhurst Estate Bacchus Reserve 2014

“Enticing notes of fig leaf and granny smith” is how Barr describes this wine. “New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc without the air miles, produced by Chapel Down in Kent.”

£13, M&S

Knightor Trevannion 2014

“Aromatic Siegerrebe, Schönburger and Pinot Gris somehow adds up to Gewürztraminer”, Barr writes of this English wine.

“Floral warmth, jasmine and spicy, rosy attar. A Cornish cracker.”

£15, Knightor.com

Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante Superiore NV

Next, The Guardian‘s David Williams pops open some much-loved Prosecco.

“While this is a perfectly decent example of the big-foam and pear-drop character of cheaper Prosecco, its price also means it’s the one I’d choose for mixing with Campari or Aperol for a homemade spritz, or with pureed white peaches for a bellini”, he writes.

£7.49, Aldi

Taste the Difference Conegliano Prosecco Superiore 2014

“Generally neck-and-neck with the (currently out of stock) Tesco Finest Bisol Prosecco as my favourite of the high-street Proseccos, this is a classic style with a nice streak of freshening lemon-sherbet to go with the sweet pear and relatively dry finish”, Williams continues.

£10, Sainsbury’s

Col Vetoraz Valdobbiadene Prosecco Frizzante 2014

“I was very impressed by the quality of the Col Vetoraz wines during a recent trip to northeast Italy: the whole range had a touch more verve than the average, with the delicate pear and white flowers joined by tropical richness and a soft, graceful mousse in this cuvée”, Williams writes.

£17, Huntsworth Wine

Marks & Spencer Puglia Rosso 2015, Italy

Next, the Sunday Express‘s Jamie Goode offers up some of his favourite Springtime reds.

“I love this bright, fresh cherry and raspberry-laden wine”, he writes.

“Puglian wines can often be a bit sweet and jammy, but this is deliciously balanced and highly drinkable.”

£7, Marks & Spencer

Torres Sangre de Toro 2013, Catalunya, Spain

“With its little plastic bull attached to the bottle cap, you might think this is a bit of a gimmicky wine”, Goode continues.

“But it’s a classic Spanish brand that really delivers, with moreish, vibrant berry fruits as well as a nice spicy bite.”

£5.50, Tesco

2015 *finest Tingleup Riesling, Great Southern, Western Australia

“I have tasted every release of this quirkily named wine and they have always seemed a little tried to me, but this spankingly new 2015 is anything but!” writes the Daily Mail‘s Matthew Jukes.

“Pole-vaulting out of the glass with lime zest leading the way this is a terrific, tangy white made by the great Howard Park winery.”

£8.00, Tesco

2014 Nieto Senetiner, Bonarda, Mendoza, Argentina

“I have been drinking this wine for nearly a year and it has evolved from a nervous, shy, restrained red into a boisterous, extrovert character”, Jukes continues.

“The dense, plum-soaked fruit and touched of coffee bean and dark chocolate are wonderful. Grab it at this bargain price because it won’t last long.”

£9.00, reduced to £7.00 until 25 April, Marks & Spencer
