The former Leicester City and Derby County footballer acts as the landlord of the ‘Golden Tanning Pub’, serving John Smith’s new Golden Ale while punters spray themselves with golden paint.

On filming the new ad, which can be viewed below, savage told the Mirror: “It was good fun, if a bit bizarre. This pub is in a really busy part of central London and it was glass fronted on both sides.

“I was standing there in these little gold shorts and there were loads of people taking photos!

“I’ve had spray tans before, when I was on Strictly [Come Dancing], but this stuff wouldn’t come off afterwards.

“I had to get the train home with golden hair! Mind you, most people probably thought this look was a bit toned down for me…”

John Smith’s, best known for its Extra Smooth ale, is promoting its new lighter golden brew.

The Heineken-owned brand is based in Tadcaster, Yorkshire, scene of heavy flooding in January which prompted it to pledge £50,000 to help rebuilding efforts in the town.
