de Leon named Macau’s ‘best sommelier’

Billy de Leon from the JW Marriott beat nine others to become the Macau finalist in the Best Sommelier in Greater China competition.

Hosted by the Hong Kong Sommelier Association, last week’s final in Macau for the Best Sommelier Greater China Competition was won by Billy de Leon from the JW Marriott.

Beating nine other hopefuls, de Leon will go on to compete in the Hong Kong finals this September against other top sommeliers from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. He has also previously won the Macau final in 2013.

Born in the Phillipines, de Leon moved to Macau in 2007 and trained as a sommelier four years ago before working for the JW Marriott which opened in May of this year.

“I feel extremely honoured that my passion for my job as wine sommelier at JW Marriott Hotel Macau has been recognized and that I have the opportunity to represent Macau’s food and beverage industry in greater China,” said de Leon.

“But more importantly, I look forward to continue doing what I love and sharing some of my favorite wines with JW Marriott Hotel Macau guests to create a lasting impression.”
