Craft cider in a can launched

Taking inspiration from the recent trend for craft beer in cans, Westons has launched Caple Rd – a craft cider in a can aimed at restaurants.

The 5.2% abv sparkling cider is named after the road leading to the Westons farm in the Herefordshire village of Much Marcle.

Cable Rd is made in small batches with English apple juice and matured for up to 18 months in oak to create, according to its makers, a “refined, full-bodied, amber-coloured cider.”

Westons states that the can format better protects the cider from light than a bottle, keeping the liquid fresher for longer as it’s airtight.

“Great ciders are in my blood. I’ll only use the finest yeast and bittersweet apple juice available.

“Caple Rd has been designed to challenge cider-makers’ palates, with its dark straw colour, notes of leather and robust oaky taste,” said maker Guy Lawrence, a fifth generation member of the Weston family.

Geoff Bradman, Westons head of sales, added: “The canned craft beer category has seen huge growth over the last couple of years, yet so far no one has launched a craft cider in a can.

“Early feedback from our research on Caple Rd has been phenomenal from both the trade and consumers, so we’re delighted to be bringing some genuine innovation to the market.”

Westons & Sons was founded in 1880. Today the company makes a range of ciders including Stowford Press, Wyld Wood Organic Cider and Old Rosie.
