Taiwanese buyer scoops world’s biggest truffle

A buyer from Taiwan paid US$61,250 for the world’s biggest white truffle in New York this weekend before participating in Sotheby’s wine sale afterwards.

Weighing 4.16 pounds (1.89 kilos), the truffle is the largest ever found and is twice the size of the previous record holder.

The buyer was described as a “food and wine lover” and was apparently planning to participate in the wine sale taking place immediately afterwards.

Despite spending over $60,000 (all proceeds are going to charity) the buyer may still have had some spare cash as the final price was far below the $417,200 paid for the last record holder in 2010 which retains the record for the biggest price tag if for its size anymore.

The wine sale afterwards included an ex-cellar consignment from Paul Jaboulet and the results will be dealt with in a separate article.
