Blatch, who has been involved in the wine trade – in particular in Bordeaux – for more than 40 years will be tasked with finding “unique and interesting crus to include in Christie’s international wine sales.”

Christie’s announced: “His unique experience and his knowledge of the field will no doubt benefit the expertise of Christie’s wine experts, in a flourishing global market.”

Having started in the trade as a buyer for Grants of St James’s, Blatch swiftly moved on to a life in France having married a Frenchwoman, Tita.

In 1974 he became export director for Bordeaux négociants A. Delor et Compagnie and in 1982 he founded another négociant, Vintex, from which he retired last March.
