Entries open for IWSC 2011
The International Wine & Spirits Competition has opened for entries, with the announcement of an important development for its 2011 tasting programme.
This year sees the judging of South African wines move from London to Stellenbosch. The initiative builds on last year’s decision to move US wine judging to California, thereby reducing shipping costs for producers and ensuring IWSC winners benefit from a greater profile in their own country.
The Californian judging round will take place in March at the Culinary Institute of America, while South African wines will be judged in July, in line with the IWSC policy of ensuring its judging is based upon the most current southern hemisphere vintage.
Allen Gibbons, IWSC managing director, said: “We at the IWSC are constantly striving to offer producers further added value each year, as the new judging procedure for South African and the continuation of the highly successful US judging demonstrate."
Highlighting the advantages winning an IWSC medal can bring, Gibbons explained: “We work with the producers to help build brands and drive sales by communicating these triumphs to the trade and press around the world and we provide all our winners with complimentary marketing materials and exposure on our website to help them achieve the recognition they deserve.”
The IWSC will also be offering last year’s medal winners additional exposure at international trade events, including ProWein, the London International Wine Fair, Vinexpo and Vinitaly.
Spirits winners will be available for tasting at the IWSC’s Worshipful Company of Distillers Spirits Tasting, while the full field of wine and spirits winners will be on show at the IWSC banquet in November.
The deadline for northern hemisphere wine entries is 26 February and all spirit entries must be received by 30 April. For the southern hemisphere, South African entries are due in by 1 July, South America by 5 August, Australia by 12 August and New Zealand by 26 August.
