Harrods hotel talk grows

A luxury hotel above Harrods looks to be on the cards.

The department store’s new owner, Qatar Holdings, is understood to be weighing up various plans to open a hotel on the upper floors of the building. Under the proposals the floor would also house a restaurant.

The plans come as US management consultancy, Boston Consulting Group, carries out a review on how to improve the store’s business efficiency.

Other options that have been mooted include sister branches abroad in cities such as Shanghai.

The widening of online sales and branded souvenirs for the mass-market are also reported to be under serious consideration.

According to an “industry source” speaking to the Evening Standard, the Harrods Hotel would be very popular with wealthy foreign guests: “You can imagine some people virtually living in it,” they said.
