The eyes of the wine trade were on Old Trafford at the weekend as Manchester United launched its new partnership with Chilean wine company Concha y Toro. Pictured from left to right are: Alfonso Larrain, chairman of Concha y Toro; Sir Alex Ferguson, manager, Manchester United; club captain Gary Neville; midfielder Ryan Giggs; defender Wes Brown; South Korean international Ji-Sung Park; Manchester United commercial director Richard Arnold; new signing Javier Hernandez; and Concha y Toro’s global marketing manager Giancarlo Bianchetti.

The Concha y Toro advertising boards ring the Old Trafford pitch. They are there, you’ll just have to take our word for it!

The new boards were debuted during Sunday’s match between Manchester United and Liverpool, and by sheer coincidence appeared for the very first time the instant the ball hit the back of the net for United’s first goal, ensuring mass viewing through replays and pictures of the players’ celebrations.

As well as having its wines served to guests and supporters in the stadium’s hospitality areas and bars, Concha y Toro’s name and logo will be broadcast to billions around the globe during live Manchester United matches.

Manchester United legend and England World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton was delighted to meet db‘s Alan Lodge at a gala dinner at the Lowry hotel in Manchester to mark the partnership.

Various wine trade folk await the results of the 2010 Louis Roederer Awards on the top floor of the Gherkin in central London.

Louis Roederer used the event to launch the Cristal 2004 vintage, which guests quaffed down once the awards had been announced.

Passers-by got a surprise in Devon as they witnessed a billboard spelt out entirely by bees. The huge ad, created by the Banrock Station wine brand from Constellation Wines, was erected to launch its special edition wines available exclusively at The Co-operative. Money from the sale of every bottle of these wines will go to help preserve the British bee population as part of The Co-operative’s Plan Bee campaign.

The Wines of Argentina tasting at Lord’s Cricket Ground was a huge affair, with guests marvelling at the sheer number of wineries who used the tasting to showcase their wines.

Matt Allen (vineyard manager) and Duncan McTavish (winemaker) of Man O’ War in Waiheke Island prepare for their London masterclass.

Mariah Carey’s £640 brut NV called Angel in all its formats at official UK launch at Vanquish Wine. The platinum painted bottle with silver label certainly stands out alongside Veuve, Roederer, Bolly, Krug and Moët, but is surprisingly similar to a special edition large format DP just behind.

Patience Gould (r), editor of The Spirits Business, judges the Scotch category in the 2010 Travel Retail Masters alongside drinks trade PR veteran Eugene Bacot at The Parlour in Canary Wharf, London.

Central London came to a standstill at the weekend as the Pope came to town. Here his Popemobile drives by Hyde Park Corner.

Wad a mess: Wine writer and broadcaster Joe Wadsack cooks up some Asian colslaw in db‘s Jane Parkinson’s kitchen. She still hasn’t quite finished the clean-up operation.

"Where’s all this f***ing time come from ref?!?" db‘s Alan Lodge does his best Alex Ferguson impression during a tour of Old Trafford.
