BT Tower restaurant to reopen
Plans are underway for London’s landmark BT Tower to reopen its revolving restaurant to the public for the first time in nearly 30 years.
BT is reported to be searching for a chef to manage the high profile, high altitude project, which is due to open at the end of 2011 in time for the London Olympics.
The restaurant lies on the 34th floor of the 581ft high tower, which opened in 1965. Its revolving floor offers diners a spectacular 360Ëš view of London, during the course of a full 20 minute rotation.
Security fears were largely responsible for the restaurant being closed to the public in 1980.
Concerns were originally sparked in 1971 when an IRA bomb went off in the building’s lavatories. Since then, the restaurant has been used exclusively for BT corporate hospitality and events.
Gary Rhodes, Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal have all been mentioned as possible big names that have been approached about adding their name to a venture that looks set to become one of the most eagerly anticipated restaurant openings in recent times.
