10,000 bottles of fake Lafite uncovered in China

Police in China have seized 10,000 bottles of Lafite they suspect are fake in an abandoned house.

The haul was uncovered at a vacant house in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, the house’s owner named only as Zhou has not lived in the house for nine years and denies any knowledge of the stash.

If genuine the collection is worth in the region of 100 million yuan (US$16m), however only 50,000 bottles of real Lafite are imported into China every year.

Police are said to be confident that it is fake and that they hope to find the workshop where it is produced close by.

The property was guarded by five “aggressive” dogs, including two Tibetan mastiffs – a rare red example of which was recently sold for £945,000.

The police also tracked down and questioned a man that had been feeding the dogs for the last three years.

However he said that he had only been employed to do so and did not have his employer’s telephone number.

Combating fake production has become a key battle for Lafite, among other producers, since wine’s popularity took off in China.

Police in Shanghai recently smashed a counterfeit ring in one of the more high profile cases of late.

  1. We’ll take the rare red at £945,000.

    Unless that’s a fake, too…

  2. Margaret Rand says:

No, it’s the dogs that are fake – a wily double bluff.

  3. Davy Leung says:

They are not the real Ch. Lafite but the same company. Those Chinese recognise and say everything with 5 arrows a Lafite.
