UK to host Riesling Summit

The UK will host its first ever Riesling Summit this June, organised by Wines of Germany.

Marking the first in a series of summer activities from the generic body in celebration of Riesling, the one day trade event will take place on Wednesday 27 June in Central London.

The summit will feature a panel debate, a showcase tasting of modern German Rieslings from 300 of the country’s most talented young winemakers, a series of masterclasses from top producers and German wine experts, as well as the chance to compare an international range of the world’s best Rieslings.

With low alcohol wines a hot topic at the moment, the event will kick off with a panel discussion about Germany’s place within this emerging category, aiming to highlight the country’s Riesling as “the natural choice for consumers who are looking for lighter wine styles but don’t want to compromise on quality.”

Picking up on the event’s aim of helping the UK trade to maximise sales of German wines, Nicky Forrest, UK managing director of Wines of Germany, remarked: “With responsible drinking high on the political agenda right now, German Riesling should be on the radar of every wine retailer as it ticks all the boxes of what today’s consumers are looking for.

“With the Riesling Summit, we hope to engage with the trade and show the opportunities for German Riesling both in the on- and off-trade. With growing support for Riesling evident from the many fan groups popping up all over the world, we’re looking to harness this support to get consumers to see German wines in a different light and give German Riesling a go.”

Immediately after the Riesling Summit, Wines of Germany will be seeking to build on this momentum with the launch of its “31 Days Of German Riesling” promotion, taking place across the UK  throughout July. Restaurants and wine merchants wishing to participate should click here for further details.
