Tasting notes:
De Bortoli, now a watch-word for high-quality and good value among Australian wines, was started in 1928 and is now owned and operated by the third and fourth generations in multiple regions. This wine, named for Deen himself, the \'Dean\' and father and a visionary, is exceptional. Produced from the lesser known Durif (Petite Sirah) and then blended with a bit of Shiraz before ageing in American and French oak, the wine is a delight. Almost opaque purple-black in colour, the wine is packed with blackberry and vanilla and chocolate. Dry, though sweet-fruited, the palate flavour is balanced by lively acidity, dense tannins and warming alcohol. A black olive note adds interest on the finish. Great with spicy venison chili.
