Producers stand by Oddbins as Domaine Paul Mas adds new sku

Domaine Paul Mas has launched a new sku into beleaguered UK wine retailer Oddbins, demonstrating the support that producers have for the specialist retailer that is currently operating under administrators.

The Languedoc powerhouse has launched its Château Paul Mas Clos des Mures 2018 – a blend of 85% Syrah, 105 Grenache, and 5% Mourvedre – into the retailer (RRP: £17), which is now on shelf.

It is described by the retailer as a wine with ‘splendid, weighty body and smooth tannins supporting a sensual dark fruit palate of blackcurrant, blackberries, dark cherry violet and cacao concluding with a long mineral finish’.

It joins others recent additions to the range, including from Australian producer Santolin Wines, three organic, low intervention winesAlexander Gysler – Gysler Grauerburgunder 2018, Gysler Kammerton Riesling 2018 and Gysler ‘Kraft’ Bio 2018 – and Israeli wine brand, Dalton Winery, which won its first listing at the beleaguered retailer in September for its Canaan Red Blend 2018.

The retailer also launched a web exclusive range of around 15 wines over the summer, including Maison Dousset Chablis 2018 (RRP: £14), Masseria Borgo dei Trulli Primitivo IGP Salento 2017 (RRP: £18) and Mystic Ocean Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (RRP: £12).

Oddbin’s parent company, European Food Brokers Retail Ltd has been in administration since January, but joint-administrators Duff & Phelps confirmed in a report for creditors published on Companies House in August, that terms of a sale were in the process of being agreed with a proposed purchaser, who is believed to be the business’s former owner.

The deal is thought to involve the purchase of individual stores within the 56-strong retail portfolio, which comprises 32 Oddbin stores across the UK and 24 stores that trade under the Booze Buster, Simply Drinks, Oddies, and Shop2Go fascias. In March, nearly half (45%) of the retail stores owned by parent company European Food Brokers Retail Ltd were deemed unprofitable and shut.
