Corbières to require environmental certification
The winemaking syndicat in the Languedoc appellation Corbières has announced that by 2024 AOC certification will also require environmental certification.
Producers in the region wishing to have their wines certified AOC from 2024 onwards will have to demonstrate that they are working sustainably, organically or biodynamically or are at least in conversion, with certifications from Terra Vitis, Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE), Agriculture Biologique, Demeter or Biodyvin.
As reported by French site Terre de Vins, 30% of the region’s producers work in an environmentally friendly manner and that will rise to 60% by 2020 when producers currently being certified are taken into account.
Of the total AOC vineyard land of 10,600 hectares, 1,300ha are certified organic and 565ha as HVE.
Corbières is the latest wine region to announce that environmental practices are to become a requirement of PDO certification.
As previously reported by the drinks business, in Bordeaux both St Emilion and Bordeaux Superieur are seeking to introduce similar measures by the early 2020s while Conegliano Valdobbiadene recently announced it was banning the use of glyphosate herbicides.
