Here are 12 drinks firms with the smallest gender pay gaps

Last week, firms in the drinks industry revealed just how much they pay women compared to men.

While gender parity is still a far-off dream for the vast majority of businesses, much of the drinks industry has shown they’re ahead of the curve, with dozens publishing pay gap figures that fall below the national average of 14.1% in favour of men.

In fact, some firms like Majestic have even published average salary figures which favour women.

We’ve rounded up some of the bar groups, brewing giants and wine merchants with a mean average pay gap lower than 10%, from Fuller’s to Majestic.

According to figures published by the ONS in January, the mean hourly gender pay gap for full-time workers was 14.1%, compared with 9.1% for the median.

The median average is a more accurate representation of how women and men are paid equally. The vast number of national media outlets, including the Guardian and Financial Times, use the median figure in their reports. this is because at any given employer, half of the staff earn more than the median salary and half earn less. The median, therefore, is a better reflection of the salaries of a typical male or female employee.

The highest-paid employees earn significantly more than the lowest paid, so the mean, tends to be much higher than the median.

Craft beer giant BrewDog published a portion of its gender pay gap calculations ahead of International Women’s Day. The brewer said it had an impressive median pay gap of 2.8% at the time.

In fact, the gap actually swings the other way. According to its full report, BrewDog’s median pay gap is 2.2% in favour of women. You can read the full report here.

The reason we use the mean in this ranking is for the exact reason that a high-earning member of staff could skew the figures. The mean average often highlights a specific issue, as generally there are fewer women in higher-paying roles than men.

For example, the average pay gap figures BrewDog published on deadline day itself showed a mean gap of just over 10%. Just to demonstrate how this can play out in real terms, all four of BrewDog’s board members are male, and the top-earning bracket is around 70% male at the company. So despite an impressive median average, and a mean average which does fall four percentage points below the national, the firm hasn’t been included in this list.

In order to keep the typical employee figure relevant to our ranking, we have removed any company with a median pay gap over the national average of 9.3%.

So, without further ado, here is a collection of firms in the world of drink that currently offer the lowest gender pay gaps.

12. Fuller’s

Women’s mean hourly rate is 9.7% lower than men’s. With this figure, women earn 90p for every £1 that men earn.

Women’s median hourly rate is 0.1% higher than men’s. With this figure, women earn almost the same as men.
