Ex-Fat Duck Chef opens restaurant where everything is served on toast

A former chef at The Fat Duck is now behind the kitchen at a restaurant paying homage to the humble slice of toast.

Toast, the brainchild of owner Justin Orange, twin brother to Take That star Jason, is a “unique coffee house and eatery” in Altrincham, Cheshire, where almost everything is served on toast, from breakfast through to dessert.

Carr, whose extensive CV includes stints at Michelin-starred Dabbous in London and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, will head up the kitchen at the new care, serving up a range of gourmet toppings on five different kinds of freshly baked bread sourced from a local bakery.

The casual restaurant will serve up an all-day menu split into four categories; breakfast on toast, lunch on toast, toast-less dishes, and desserts on toast, including peaches and Chantilly cream, and chocolate and hazelnut spread with melted marshmallow.

Two eggs your way will set you back by £5 on the breakfast menu, while lunch dishes range from £7 for peached egg, chorizo and nduja, to £9.50 for a white crab, lime juice and coriander-topped slice.

There’s even a children’s menu, with small dishes like beans on toast priced at £4.

But if you’re not a fan of barbecued bread, there is also a small selection of toast-less dishes including honey-mustard chicken salad with tomato and asparagus, or butternut squash with thyme, honey and goats cheese.

The restaurant launched on Friday 20 October, with all proceeds from the first day of trading going towards local children’s charity Adventure Farm.
