Fine Wine steady in August

The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 and 1000 indices saw a small gain and a small decline respectively in August.

The Fine Wine 100 rose just 0.09% last month while the Liv-ex 1000 declined 0.1% with the Rhône 100 sub-index in particular drifting further from the pack with a decline of close to 3%.

The best performers on the Fine Wine 100 came from a number of regions. The Comte de Vogüé’s 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes was the month’s biggest mover, up 14.6% to £5,710, closely followed by the 2010 Pape Clement which was up 14.4%.

Opus One’s 2010, Léoville las Cases’ 2000 and Penfolds’ 2009 Grange were also among the top five.

The recently upgraded (to 100-points) 2005 La Mission Haut-Brion failed to sustain its price after a recent surge and declined 4.8% to just under £4,000 a case.

Dom Pérignon’s 2002 dropped 5.7% to under £1,000 p/cs, Cheval Blanc and Ornellaia’s 2009 vintages declined just over 4% each while the month’s worst performer was 2010 Sassicaia, which declined 6.3% to £970 p/cs.

As mentioned above, the Rhône 100 drifted further from its fellow sub-indices in the Liv-ex 1000 although the majority declined to some degree with the exception of the Bordeaux 500 and Champagne 50 which rose 0.47% and 0.69% respectively.
