Chivite’s Gran Vino Rosado 2023 is ripe for ageing

Chivite Winery’s Colección 125 Gran Vino Rosado 2023 stands out as ‘a groundbreaking rosé’, crafted from Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Syrah, and aged in barrels for up to 12 months.

The Chivite Colección 125 line debuted in 1985 to celebrate the winery’s 125th anniversary of its first export to Bordeaux in 1860. In 1993, the anniversary collection became part of the winery’s flagship vintage range. These historic wines are designed for ageing, making them essential for collectors and wine enthusiasts who appreciate tradition.

Chivite Colección 125 Gran Vino Rosado 2023 combines elegant and structured Tempranillo with Syrah and Garnacha, enriching the wine’s aromatic palette with spicy and fruity notes. For Chivite’s 2023 vintage rosé, the three grape varieties benefited from a year marked by extreme heat and prolonged drought, culminating in the earliest harvest in Navarra’s history.

To make its flagship rosé, Chivite harvests grapes from the Finca Legardeta vineyard, located between the Spanish La Rioja and French Bordeaux wine regions. The vineyard features three distinctive plots of land, each at an elevation falling between 450 and 565 meters, set against a scenic backdrop. The first plot, Caracierzo, faces northwest and is planted with Garnacha vines that are more than 40 years old. The second plot, La Zamaca, faces south and hosts younger Syrah vines. Lastly, Musquildia has a southwest orientation and is home to Tempranillo vines, which are also more than 40 years old.

Chivite’s rosé wine is fermented in 225-litre French oak barrels and aged on its lees for nine to 12 months before bottling. The result is a rosé that David González, winemaker at Chivite, describes as a wine “with a lot of personality and character. Fresh and fleshy on the palate.”

The pink salmon-hued wine offers intense aromas of raspberry and pomegranate, accompanied by notes of cumin, liquorice, sandalwood, dried flowers, and a subtle earthy background. On the palate, the rosé is fleshy and voluminous, featuring an initial creamy texture with hints of toasted nuts. It finishes fresh and persistent, enhanced by citrus and aniseed notes.

Chivite Colección 125 Gran Vino Rosado 2023 is available in select markets and is limited to 12,500 bottles.

Cutting-edge excellence

Since its founding in 1647, Chivite has developed a unique approach to viticulture and winemaking, creating a distinctive signature that has withstood the test of time.

The winery has cultivated a deep connection to its land and the art of winemaking, overcoming challenges while maintaining an unwavering dedication to tradition, quality, and the singular character of its wines.

Chivite’s winemaking excellence has been shaped by figures of international prestige, including Denis Dubourdieu (1949–2016), the creative force behind the iconic Colección 125 Blanco and Vendimia Tardía, and César Muñoz, who continued the legacy until 2022. Today, David González brings his own vision to this ever-evolving story.

The core of Chivite lies in the Legardeta Estate in Villatuerta. Spread over 103 hectares, it benefits from a unique microclimate – Atlantic breezes from the north, Mediterranean warmth from the southeast, and the shelter of the Pyrenees – allowing for slow, balanced grape maturation. Its varied soils and high-density plantings produce wines of remarkable structure, aromatic complexity, and depth.

Legardeta stands out for its harmonious integration into the landscape and for the careful selection of varieties, both natives – such as Garnacha and Tempranillo – and international, including Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The richness of the terroir means that, within the same plot, areas bathed in intense sunlight coexist with others more sheltered in shade, creating a mosaic of aromas and flavours that define the estate’s wines.
