Cuatro Rayas becomes Spain’s first winery with international FSC licence

The bodega has achieved a new sustainability milestone with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, reinforcing the importance of responsible resource use.

Bodega Cuatro Rayas has become the first winery in Spain to obtain an international promotional licence from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The certification ensures that materials used in the winery’s production and packaging – such as paper and cardboard – are sourced from responsibly managed FSC-certified forests and other verified sources. These materials meet strict global standards for environmental, social and economic sustainability.

The recognition supports Cuatro Rayas’ broader “green & social” strategy, which includes initiatives in environmental care, the circular economy, social welfare and rural development.

Strengthening environmental and social values

Based in La Seca, Valladolid, Cuatro Rayas operates as a cooperative within DO Rueda. Its strategic plan focuses on improving quality of life for members and employees while fostering generational renewal in rural areas by creating economic opportunities and securing long-term employment.

The winery promotes sustainable practices such as renewable energy use, responsible water management, waste reduction and the support of local jobs. It also emphasises values including economic transparency, ethical governance, quality, innovation and social responsibility.

With this FSC certification, the winery strengthens its position as a national and international reference point for sustainability in the wine industry.

FSC: A globally recognised standard

Founded over 30 years ago, the Forest Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. Its certifications span a wide range of forest-based products, from construction materials to packaging and paper.

A 2024 study by More Than Research found that Spanish consumers identified FSC as the most recognised sustainability label in its category. Globally, FSC certification covers 162 million hectares of forest and includes 66,000 companies in its certified chain of custody.

In Spain, over 846,000 hectares of forest are FSC certified, including 85,000 in Castilla y León. The country also has around 1,800 certified companies, with the number continuing to grow at an annual rate of 53%.

Cuatro Rayas’ adoption of FSC standards places it at the forefront of this growth within the wine sector.
