Anspach & Hobday jumps on the salt and beer trend

The Pineapple Gose, a beer made with Maldon Salt, has been released by London brewery Anspach & Hobday. Jessica Mason finds out more.

The trend for salt and beer has been well documented, even with big brewers backing it with releases of their own. Previously, we saw claims purporting that salt assisted in giving beer a salinity, improving its flavour encouraging the drinker go in for one more sip, while elsewhere the trend for keeping beer salt on the bar was said to give drinkers the option to season their brews. But is this a fad or an age-old tradition? According to Anspach & Hobday, it’s the perfect marriage of ingredients.

Speaking to the drinks business, Anspach & Hobday co-founder and director John Hobday said: “Some purport that salt and beer are the foundations of civilisation.”

Hobday told db that, because of this, the union of salt and beer have been “brought together at their best in the Pineapple Gose with our friends at Maldon Salt”.

Anspach & Hobday first released a collaborative brew with Malson Salt back in 2022. The previous salted beer, which was called a Sea Salt and Lime Gose, was infused with lime zest, lime juice and Maldon’s sea salt.

The new collaborative brew, which has been made with Maldon Salt, which is known for its pyramid-shaped sea salt flakes, is said to be a modern take on the traditional gose beer style and has also been infused with pineapple to give the beer a tart acidity and salinity.

According to Hobday, the new release is “a wonderful juicy, fruity, sour beer which finishes with a fantastic moreish salinity”.

Maldon Salt product portfolio manager Simon James explained: “This partnership brings together two greats of British craftsmanship – our time-honoured salt-making tradition and Anspach & Hobday’s fresh approach to brewing. The result is a vibrant, flavourful beer that celebrates taste, creativity and the joy of sharing good moments.”

Hobday admitted that “Maldon are a real treat to work with; as versatile as they are enduring.”

He added: “Let’s toast the fantastic Pineapple Gose – a beer for the civilised summer.”

The Pineapple Gose is available across local and independent wine and craft beer shops and via the Anspach & Hobday webshop.
