Thornbridge to unveil new Union-exclusive beer

Thornbridge Brewery is launching a second core beer, named 1838, which has been brewed on the historic Burton Union kit it saved in 2024.

The 4.5% ABV pale ale, will be unveiled at CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival Winter (GBBFW), which is held from 12-15 February at Magna in Rotherham.

The news follows the initial decision from Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) to retire the four remaining union sets at Marston’s Burton-on-Trent brewery, a move that saddened beer fans before Thornbridge salvaged them.

Then, last spring, Thornbridge set out to prove Britain’s brewing heritage could continue to be profitable and by the summer had released a new IPA, named The Union, brewed exclusively on its newly-acquired Union equipment.

The new beer the brewery has now launched has been named 1838 after the year Peter Walker patented the Burton Union system and has been brewed exclusively on the historic set which now resides at Thornbridge in Bakewell.

Speaking to the drinks business, Thornbridge CEO and co-founder Simon Webster explained: “This was always going to be the beer that we would brew most on The Union.”

According to Webster, the brew showcases a blend of Maris Otter malt with Savinjski Goldings hops to create a full-bodied beer with a light amber hue with rich, biscuity malt flavours, balanced by floral hop notes and a crisp, refreshing finish.

Webster also told db that owning the Union system now “gives us the chance to create the style of beer that has been brewed most on Union systems since Walker first invented them”.

He added: “I’m sure it will be a big hit with drinkers.”
