Man who drinks 20 pints each weekend stays healthy

Tests recently showed that a man who downed 20 pints of Guinness each weekend was still completely healthy.

The results, which were disclosed on the Virgin Media series The Clinic For Well People, saw Mick O’Brien from Kerry in Ireland receiving a clean bill of health, despite the fact that he downs 18-20 pints of stout every weekend.

On the show, O’Brien who is in his 70s, talked of his fondness for pints of Guinness while the tests showed he had “a metabolic age of 68, excellent blood pressure and a healthy heart”.

While viewing the results, Dr Jean Kenny admitted that O’Brian’s thyroid was “perfect” and his liver is still looking “good” and explained to him: “If you mind yourself, you could live until you’re 102.”

Despite the results, Dr Kenny went on to warn O’Brian that his drinking was more than twice the recommended intake and advised him to try to cut down to around eight pints a week instead.

Speaking about the test results, O’Brian said: “I’ll have to consider whether I’ll comply with what the medical people say.”

O’Brian revealed that he kept fit by walking 25 miles a week but likes to enjoy himself at the end of the week. However, he added that when he wrote down his intake on his form before seeing the doctors, he did his best to be honest about the amount.

Dr Kenny explained that the “one thing that alerted me” on his medical form was how he revealed how he consumed 40 units of alcohol a week.

Additionally, Dr Kenny explained that a half a pint of beer is one unit, so a pint was two units and 20 pints was equal to 40 units. She reiterated that the recommended weekly allowance is meant to be around 17 units.

Following the assessment, Dr Kenny told O’Brian: “You have alcohol-free days which is good, but you need to address the drinking at the weekend.”

However, Dr Kenny also observed that O’Brian has “superb” genetics and according to further inspection deduced that “his genes for longevity are good; his father worked until he was 90 on the home farm, drove until 93 and died of a stroke at 97. His mother also lived into her 90s and an aunt lived to 102”.

The Clinic For Well People series, which examines people with no obvious health issues, continues on Wednesdays at 9pm on Virgin Media Player and Virgin One.
