Mar de Frades shows expertise in Albariño
Well into its fourth decade in Rías Baixas, Mar de Frades is proving its expertise by pushing boundaries with the region’s signature grape.
Mar de Frades is well established in DO Rías Baixas. The winery has been operating for as long as the appellation has existed; in fact, it opened a year before, in 1987. It has grown in reputation and production such that it is the top-selling Spanish white wine in its price category.
Yet its success is not simply a product of repeating the same winning formula year in, year out. Since Zamora Company acquired the winery in 2003, Mar de Frades has expanded the possibilities of its signature grape, Albariño.
That approach began almost immediately, with the launch of Finca Valiñas, an Albariño designed specifically for ageing. Much received wisdom indicates that the grape should almost be enjoyed fresh and young. Mar de Frades, however, became one of the few producers to see its potential for ageing.
The winery took an even bigger leap into the unknown with the release of Mar de Frades Brut Nature. This was the first 100% Albariño sparkling wine to be made using the traditional method, once more going against the ‘rulebook’ of acceptable varieties for such a style of wine. It has since become a cornerstone of the portfolio.
Contemporary moves
The winery has since continued its bold approach, informed by a deep understanding of Albariño’s potential. For instance, in a move mimicking the granitic terroirs of its vineyards, it has begun experiments with granite tanks. These vessels are being used to age wines, with winemaker Paula Fandiño exploring how the material affects body and aroma.
Mar de Frades is further leveraging its expertise through a sustainability driven approach. With cover crops and sheep grazing in the vineyards, it is promoting biodiversity in ways that support its ambitious winemaking. It is also shaking things up to cut emissions, such as in its reduced weight bottles.
It is evident that the winery is keen to pursue a green agenda in its corner of northwest Spain. The expertise at Mar de Frades has already led to exciting new styles; now it is also protecting the region’s vineyards for future generations.
