Flavour pioneers partner to celebrate Mexican Independence Day

A supper club, with dishes from Casa Oaxaca and cocktails from Mexico City bar Hanky Panky was hosted at London’s Viajante87 this week to celebrate Mexican Independence Day.

The event, which was sponsored by the mezcal brand the Lost Explorer, invited commentators and tastemakers from across the sector to the Notting Hill venue to be guided through a raft of drinks and dishes representing the very best of Mexican flavours.

The selection of courses, which were created under the stewardship of renowned chef Alejandro Ruiz, were served up alongside a full menu of cocktails from the mixologists at the venue Hanky Panky, currently No.22 of the World’s 50 Best bars.

The one-night-only dinner featured Oaxaca-sourced scallops, along with turkey-stuffed tetela and a medley of insect tostadas, along with cocktails that included ingredients such as eucalyptus, avocado leaf and chintextle.

The supper club was followed by a full takeover of the bar from Hanky Panky, owned by Walter Meyenberg, and led by Ismael Martinez and Gina Barbachano, where guests got to taste cocktails celebrating the flavours of Mexico and Latin America.

Speaking at the event, a spokesperson for the team said: “Everything you’re about to eat was brought in two 40 kilo suitcases straight from Oaxaca, that also includes the ingredients in the cocktails – everything. So it is really, really special.”

The spokesperson added: “This is a culture exchange, bringing Mexico to London” and urged everyone to celebrate and sample new flavours both in food and in cocktails from across the globe for the evening.
