Sierra Nevada collaborates with Omnipollo to create new DIPA
US brewery Sierra Nevada has teamed up with Swedish brewery Omnipollo to brew a beer to celebrate Hazy IPA Day on 15 August.
The 8.2% ABV Double IPA, named Sierra Nevada x Omnipollo Hazy Day IPA, will be available at the Sierra Nevada’s California and North Carolina breweries, through its online gift shop, and at select bars in New York.
Speaking to the drinks business, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co head innovation brewer Isaiah Mangold said: “We go all in for Hazy IPA Day. We wanted a premium example of the style. So we designed this ultra-Hazy DIPA with our friends at Omnipollo for maximum hazy, hoppy flavour. “
Collaborative
Mangold told db: “Even the art on the cans was a collaborative effort” and admitted: “You can see and taste the influence from both breweries.”
According to the breweries, the beer is “worth travelling for” but suggested that even if beer fans couldn’t get their hands on a can, they should still make sure they celebrate with an IPA from wherever they are on 15 August.
The new DIPA has been heralded by the brewers for being a “silky-smooth 8.2% ABV India Pale Ale with citrusy notes of pineapple and orange candy and a soft, juicy finish”.
Hazy IPA day
The first annual Hazy IPA Day, celebrating the popular craft beer style, launched last August.
The event, led by California’s Sierra Nevada celebrates a brew that was popularised in New England in the early noughties before what became known as the ‘haze craze’ moved to the West Coast of America.
Speaking about the event last year, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co vice president of marketing Lesley Albright said: “Hazy IPA has rapidly become one of the most popular beer styles, and we felt it was time to set aside a day to celebrate its indelible mark on the craft beer world.”
The Hazy IPA beer style has been inspired by India Pale Ales (IPAs) and American IPAs. However, Hazy IPAs are sweeter and more approachable than traditional American IPAs, which have clarity due to filtration. Hazy IPAs are unfiltered so they often retain particular flavour notes. The distinctive beer is recognised for its hop-heavy pine and brightly resinous flavour and cloudy appearance.
