US$16 can of Stella Artois at MLS stadium sparks outrage

@FootyScran shares weird and wonderful football stadium food from around the world. But the beer from one Major League Soccer club has received a less-than-stellar response.

The sister page @FootyBevs has featured halftime beer innovations which astound its followers, including the Dortmund beer carrier capable of transporting six pints at once. However, for every bargain shared to @FootyScran’s more than 400,000 Twitter followers, there is an overpriced offering sure to leave people aghast.

This particular post concerns a US$30 meal of chicken tenders, fries and a can of beer, at MLS club New York Red Bulls. The beer alone costs US$16/GBP£12.80, and most of the comments are horrified that a single tin of Stella Artois could be so expensive.

The general consensus was shock at the prices for refreshment in American stadia: “And I thought stadium food over here was a rip off, that’s daylight robbery.”

One user asked: “Does the Stella come with three more Stellas?”

Another resigned themselves to the inevitable mockery: “They’re already making fun of us for paying for health care. They’re going to roast us even more for paying for this too.”

One response shared an amusing anecdote in support of Stella’s reputation in the US: “I was dating an American girl, and we were playfully discussing baby names (as you do), and she suggested Stella, after her favourite beer, and wouldn’t understand why I found that so funny.”

To put the cost into perspective, a ten pack of Stella Artois costs GBP£10 from Asda. New York Red Bulls are currently fifth in the league and play at the 25,000 seater Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. As the name suggests, the team is owned by the Austrian energy drink juggernaut. db has reached out to the club for comment.
