Aaliyah Cortez posted the video in question to TikTok as a reminder of just how small a bartender’s paycheck might be in terms of their hourly rate. The service industry practise of paying low wages and relying on tipping culture was laid bare in the footage, as Cortez revealed she was left with just $9.28 in pay.

“So this is why you should always tip your bartenders and servers, anyone who waits on you or provides a service for you,” she said.

Cortez said that she worked for 70 hours and she is paid $2.13 per hour. This means, she said, that after paying out federal taxes, social security, and Medicare, she was left with a paycheck of just $9.28. “For 70 hours of work,” she reiterated.

“Of course, I got tips, but this is what I got for my hourly,” Cortez continued. “This is why you tip.”

In a later interview with BuzzFeed, she said that she was inspired to post the video in order to shed a light on how the service industry operates in some states.

“There are laws set up that allow tipped employees to be paid under the federal minimum wage, which makes us rely on the customer to pay our wages,” she said.

“It’s not right that we have to do this, but I wanted to shed some light on the issue and inform the public about the importance of tipping.”
