Trentodoc Classic Method from the Dolomites is Sparkling Wine at its Peak

Sparkling wine has experienced a global surge in demand over the past five years and Champagne alternatives in particular are getting more attention. Vivino, the world’s most popular wine app, recorded over 50% more ratings of non-Champagne sparkling wines last year.

As consumers look beyond the usual regions for their bubbles and continue to become more health-conscious, Trentodoc is well poised as a hidden gem offering many organic and biodynamic sparkling wines in a range of styles.

While perhaps not as famous as its Italian sparkling wine cousin, Prosecco, Trentodoc wines are made using the méthode traditionelle, or ‘traditional method’, which is used in Champagne and elsewhere and ensures unparalleled quality, and value.

The history of Trentodoc began in the early 1900s when Giulio Ferrari introduced the first grapes destined to be sparkling wine, but there is documentation of still wine production in the area as early as Roman times.

The DOC in Trentodoc became official in 1993, making it the first certified sparkling wine denomination in Italy, and it’s been making a name for itself ever since. In addition to being named Wine Enthusiast’s Region of the Year 2020, Trentodoc was the most awarded sparkling wine of Italy at the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships, one of the world’s most notable wine competitions led by sparkling wine critic Tom Stevenson.

Trentdoc’s location is what, quite literally, sets it above the rest. With vineyards nestled in the heart of Trentino amid the Dolomite mountains, grapes destined for Trentodoc bubbly are harvested at elevations up to 3,000 ft above sea level, some of the highest in Europe, creating an exceptionally unique environment for viticulture. Due to such high elevations and challenging mountainside terrain, it’s paramount that Trentodoc producers work primarily by hand for both pest and canopy management as well as harvesting.

Approximately 10% of wineries producing Trentodoc are certified organic and over 5,000 wineries in Trentino participate in an eco-friendly commitment program, assuring that green farming practices take place. This is the highest number of winemakers committed to sustainability in any wine region in the world.

Alessandra Stelzer’s winery, Maso Martis, has been certified organic since 2013. “Being organic means utilizing the natural richness of the soil, limiting or excluding the use of synthetic chemicals, and promoting the biodiversity in the vineyards,” she says. “Organic farming takes a lot of work, dedication, and consistency, but it’s a way of life for us, and a cornerstone in the philosophy of our production.”

These sustainable winemaking practices are second nature to the 57 vintners of Trentino, as many come from families of winemakers who have been refining their craft over the last century. “Traditionally, Trentino is a region of farmers, a trade that has been passed down from one generation to the next,“ says Carlo Moser of Moser winery.  “When Chardonnay was introduced in the area, many families began growing the variety to make Trentodoc because they understood the potential of producing high quality sparkling wines.”

Today, family wineries in Trentino often treat their vineyards as cultivated gardens, using century-old sustainable farming techniques like adding green manure, sulfur, and copper to keep the soil healthy and utilizing natural pheromone treatments to prevent pests. All of these practices culminate in a wine as fresh as the mountain air with a sense of elegance and tradition in each glass. “The region is also taking steps to make these wines more accessible through tourism and more recently, an App fully dedicated to the region,” says Sabrina Schench, director of the Institute Trento Doc. “The robust app allows visitors and Trentodoc fans worldwide to browse the wines from every producer, peruse the region’s history and even book winery visits.”
