Guala launches sustainable closures range

The Guala Closures group has launched a range of sustainable closures called Blossom and has formed a new partnership to produce products made from recycled ocean plastics.

The closure range is based on the company’s four principles of eco-design. Guala describes the launch as a “major step” towards achieving its corporate social responsibility goals, with each closure in the range following one of the company’s four eco-friendly design guidelines.

The Greencap closure, an aluminium screwcap closure, adheres to the group’s ‘design to revive’ principle. This principle focuses on recovering and recycling the materials used in the closures.

The Spring Blossom closure, an aluminium closure for mineral water, follows the ‘design to change’ guideline, using recycled materials or materials produced by renewable sources. It has a ‘tamper evident’ ring which is made from bio-based polymers.

In compliance with the ‘design to reduce’ concept, Guala’s bio-agave based closure for Tequila is made using a bio-based composite resin made with 30% waste agave fibres and 70% polypropylene.

Finally, Guala is developing a range of compostable closures that will be “completely biodegradable in all conditions”. This complies with its principle of ‘design to fade’.

Fulvio Bosano, Guala Closures group research and development director, said: “We are continuously searching for new sustainable materials and experimenting to find new solutions. It is pleasing to have successfully created a new family of closures which meets our four eco-design models. All our R&D centres are committed to the eco-design principles of sustainable solutions for all markets and customers, as well as supporting CSR commitments.”

Guala has also formed a new partnership to produce closures made from recycled plastics recovered from the sea and is also investigating the possibility of using elements recovered from old electrical appliances in its products.

The launch of its Blossom range will be accompanied by an “ambitious global awareness campaign”.

Violette Montagnese, group marketing director at Guala Closures group, added: “As a leading producer of closures worldwide, the company’s role is to lead the way in bringing to the market solutions for the spirits, beverage, water and olive oil industries. This enables the company to meet and anticipate both clients’ and consumers’ expectations in terms of sustainable packaging, as well as offering great performance and style.”
