What’s on this weekend

The future is a little bit brighter this weekend. The UK has a bank holiday this weekend, and now you can meet up with a friend (provided you stay two metres apart, of course). Lockdown measures have already been eased in France, Germany and Italy. Many American states are starting to take restaurant bookings, while in LA, bars can offer table service provided it’s al-fresco.

And if you need an extra boost to give you that Friday feeling today, well good news. It’s World Paloma Day!

World Paloma Day (22 May) provides you with more way to use up that bottle of Tequila you’ve finally started dipping into after the vodka and gin ran out.

All you need is:

50ml Tequila

15ml fresh lime juice

50ml pink grapefruit juice

1tsp sugar

50ml soda

And to get you in the mood for a socially distanced party at home, premium brand 1800® Tequila has created a music mix to accompany your Paloma cocktail, in partnership with Edinburgh-based producer Nasty P.

When: Friday 22 May (all day, within reason)

Missing good service, better steaks, juicy Malbecs, and the sweet validation of a sommelier’s approval?

M Restaurant Director, Zack Charilaou and estate director of Terrazas wines, Herve Birnie Scott, will host an Instagram live Q&A on this evening on Argentine steak chain Gaucho’s Instagram page.

The 30 minute discussion will answer questions both submitted prior to, and during, the live stream.

The Q&A will also cover the Terrazas story, wine specific questions (the geeky stuff!) and Gaucho dishes that pair well with the different iterations of Terrazas. Zack will also be tasting and discussing Reserva Malbec, Grand Malbec and Torrontes from Terrazas during the talk.

So sit back with a glass of red and a notepad and pen, and be sure to take notes for your next Gaucho visit so you can be top of the class.

Need a more sophisticated reason than “lockdown” to crack open four beers in one sitting?

Master beer trainer Christine Cryne will be leading an ‘Introduction to Beer’ virtual workshop for budding enthusiasts on Saturday 23 May at 4pm.

The session will be hosted at the Red (On)Lion, a virtual pub created by the Campaign for Real Ale to help beer lovers to converge over a pint of their favourite drink during lockdown.

Free and open to the first 50 people to sign up, participants will be asked to purchase a range of beer styles to join in the fun, including:

  • 1 lager (ideally a Pilsner)
  • 1 traditional bitter (amber of mid brown)
  • 1 golden ale
  • 1 porter or stout

You will also be encouraged to bring their own tea and digestive biscuits, some coffee grains, orange or grapefruit juice, water and pepper to compare tastes.

In retail therapy, Herefordshire-based vodka distillery Chase has teamed up with The Drinks Trust to release a limited edition run of embroidered Chase caps.

James Chase, brand ambassador, shows off the distillery’s new stash in a classic (Navy) Blue Steel pose

All proceeds from their sale go straight to the charity, which is supporting those who have been left out of work due to the widespread closure of hospitality businesses across the UK.

“We are so proud to support such a noble charity, hospitality employs around 10% of the UK’s workforce and their support will help those involved to fight through this and come out the other side stronger” James Chase, brand ambassador at Chase, said.

Let’s face it, you’re gonna spend a lot more time in parks this summer than you have in a while, so buy one of these and keep your forehead from getting singed by the sun.
